Term Definition
Continental drift The hypothesis that states that the continents once formed a single landmass, broke up, and drifted away to their present location.
Pangaea When present continents were once joined in a single, huge continent. Super continent
Sea-floor spreading The progress by which new oceanic lithosphere forms as magma rises toward the surface and solidifies
Plate tectonics The theory that explains how large pieces of the Eartha??s outermost layer, called tectonic plates, move and change.
Convergent boundary The boundary formed by the conllison of two lithospheric plates
Divergent boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.
Transform boundary The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally.
Convection currents
Hot rock from deep within the Earth rises, but cooler rock near the surface sinks. Convection causes the oceanic lithosphere to move sideways and away from the mid-ocean ridge.
Wegener He wrote about the hypothesis of continental drift.
Volcano A vent or fissure in the earths surface through which magma and gases expelled.
Hot spots A volcanically active area of Eartha??s surface far from a tectonic plate boundary.
